Cynthia, CRM Insurance

What made you decide to start Cynthia Means Insurance Agency?

I have always had the desire to work for myself, after spending more than 25+ years in the mortgage banking industry when the mortgage meltdown occurred I found myself working for the federal government.  It was during those 7 grueling years of having no autonomy, not being able to utilize my creativity, and having my earnings capped I began researching and studying industries that were recession proof.  Coupled with my financial services background, and desire to be own boss I came across the State Farm agent opportunity and the rest thereafter is history!

As a mom, how do you prioritize your day?

Luckily, I have a very flexible work schedule for the most part, however my weekends and 2-3 evenings a week or set aside for family time.

Who are your biggest influences?

Currently, my biggest influences are my peers who I gleam information from quite frequently.  Additionally, I am involved in several women organizations so I have been able to pick their brands in terms of ways in which I can leverage my brand in order to grow my footprint in the Chicagoland market.

What advice would you give moms who work from home?

You should set a schedule for yourself, that your family and you can agree on.  So often, when you work from home you either work my hours and neglect family or you spend too much time catering to family needs and as result your work suffers.  You should define your work days and hours, as if you were working a 9-5.

What advice would you give moms who are working to start or build their business?

Just do it!  Go for it!  Don’t let anyone or anything hold you back.  Do your research to ensure that your business is successful, profitable, and on sound footing.  Don’t attempt to grow to fast, it’s study and slow that runs the race.
